VBS timeslots: why your container waits for a window

Short answer

Sydney container terminals only release a container to a truck holding a booked Vehicle Booking System (VBS) timeslot, made through 1-Stop. Slots are limited and released in windows, so slot availability — not truck availability — usually decides when a container moves. Missing the window forfeits the booking.

Container terminals do not work like warehouses. A truck cannot simply arrive and collect. Every movement in and out runs through a Vehicle Booking System, and the slot is as important as the container.

How the system works

Terminals release a finite number of truck slots across each day, in windows. A carrier books a slot through the 1-Stop platform for a specific container and a specific window, then has to arrive inside it. Miss the window and the booking is forfeited — the container stays, and the next available slot may be a day away.

Why this shapes the whole schedule

Slot availability, not truck availability, is usually the constraint in Sydney container transport. When a vessel discharges a large volume, the slots for that terminal fill quickly. Peak windows go first, which is one reason a lot of container work happens before dawn and after hours: those windows are more likely to be open.

It is also why we run around the clock. A 4am slot is a real slot, and an operator working office hours simply cannot take it.

Booking our own slots

We hold active 1-Stop operator status and book our own timeslots directly. That matters more than it sounds: when a carrier depends on someone else to make bookings, every change goes through a third party, and terminal conditions change faster than a chain of emails.

What you can do

  • Give us as much notice as you can. Slots are a queue, and early bookings have more of the queue to choose from.
  • Tell us if a delivery date is genuinely fixed, so we can prioritise which window to chase.
  • Accept an unsociable window when the job is urgent. A 5am collection often beats waiting two days for a convenient one.
